Say no to interference with Boston tenancies

Boston City Councilor Mike Ross has proposed an amendment to zoning regulation that would limit the number of college students who can live together in a residential area to four. I understand the desire to keep rental rates in a range affordable to families of one or two wage-earners, who might not be able to afford the rent for a 3 or 4 bedroom apartment that parent-subsidized groups of 4 or more students could much more easily afford. However, unenforceable legislation is a waste of tax dollars and a needless addition to the ample number of regulations governing landlord-tenant rights and responsibilities. We need enforcement of Chapter 40B, not vote-pandering.

A public hearing with the city's zoning commission will be held on March 12, 9 am, in Room 900 on the 9th Floor of Boston's City Hall, according to brighton-community.blogspot.com. If you live or own property in Boston, here is a list of Boston City Councilors by neighborhood. Mike Ross's number is 617-635-4225. He is speaking at a meeting of the Brighton Allston Improvement Association at the Elks Lodge 326 Washington St in Brighton MA 02135 tonight at 7:00 pm

As noted by the Small Property Owners of America the State Sanitary Code already addresses the issue of overcrowding by requiring 150 square feet of space for the first person occupying an apartment and 100 square feet for each additional person. "If the City Councilors think that is too crowded, then state law needs to be changed, not Boston's zoning code."
